Fourth Year Medical Students and Resident Physicians Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Speakers: ** Rural Clinics and Hospitals ** February 1-28, 2009
The Interhealth South America advanced beginner/intermediate speakers’ program is a study tour and service introduction to Ecuadorian and South American primary and community health care, combined with a clinical practicum and medical Spanish immersion experience for fourth year medical students, primary care residents, and practicing physicians. During the first 2 weeks the group visits urban and rural health facilities and participates in a community health brigade in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, while studying medical Spanish under the guidance of physician program directors. For the final half of the program participants work in a rural clinic or hospital on a more individual basis while continuing formal language instruction. The language portion of the program emphasizes medical vocabulary acquisition and use, and patient interviewing skills development at an advanced beginner/intermediate speaking level. Directors are North American physicians who remain in Ecuador with participants the entire period of the program. Program components include: * Individual clinic/hospital rotation in a rural setting * Participation in a rural group health brigade * Seminar introduction to healthcare provision in South America * Group visits to primary and community healthcare programs * Participation in local indigenous health activities * Tours of Andes Mountains sites demonstrating a variety of natural environments * Formal intermediate level medical Spanish language instruction * Interactive introduction to medical interviewing in Spanish * Family homestay for a portion of the program
Program Prerequisites: 1. Completion of at least the third year of medical school 2. Interest in taking part in international education programs in a group context 3. Spanish language speaking ability at an advanced beginner level or better
