Fourth Year Medical Students and Resident Physicians Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Speakers: February 3 - March 2, 2013
The Interhealth South America advanced beginner/intermediate speakers’ program is a study tour introduction to Ecuadorian and South American primary and community health care, combined with a clinical practicum and medical Spanish immersion experience for fourth year medical students and resident physicians. During the first 2 weeks the group visits urban and rural health facilities in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador while studying medical Spanish under the guidance of physician program directors, and taking part in community health brigades. For the third week participants work in clinics and hospitals on a more individual basis while continuing language instruction. During the final week students and residents elect to remain in Quito to continue individual work, or travel with the group to the upper Amazon River basin rain forest to visit health facilities, and participate in rural health brigades. The language portion of the program emphasizes medical vocabulary acquisition and use, and patient interviewing skills development at an advanced beginner/ intermediate speaking level. The director is a North American physician who remains in Ecuador with participants for the entire period of the program.
