Program Directors Interhealth South America program directors Don Wedemeyer and Marta Alarcón have been working with programs for North American medical students in Ecuador and Colombia since 1995. As medical educators and practicing physicians, they are a married couple who live the majority of the year in the United States, and the remainder in South America. In their programs they attempt to develop conceptual bridges between the experience of practicing medicine in North America, and contrasts with healthcare provision in Latin America, especially in primary, community, and public health settings. They remain onsite in Ecuador the entire time of the program, in an attempt to ensure a high quality experience for their students. Don Wedemeyer, MD Currently an adjunct member of the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Dr. Wedemeyer has had a variety of experiences in health care around the world. Besides Latin America, among others he has previously worked in Sub-Saharan Africa, and at the World Health Organization in Geneva. He has been active in programs of the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) since the founding of the organization in 1991. Among publications are co-editing of a guidebook for medical students and other health professionals, The GHEC Guidebook; Advising Medical Students and Residents for International Health Experiences, available online on the GHEC web site, www.GlobalHealthEducation.org. Marta Alarcón, MD Dr. Alarcón is a native of Colombia where she studied medicine and undertook postgraduate training in family medicine.
